#350 Twin Blast in Chennai Central





9:18AM   One passenger died and nine others were injured in a bomb blast at an express train stationed at the Chennai Central station.

9.20AM               Investigators who visited the spot said there appeared to have been two explosions below seat number 70 of S4 compartment and seat number 30 of S5 compartment.

9.25AM      An ex gratia of Rs 1 lakh was announced for the woman who was killed in the blast. Rs 25,000                          was announced for two who were grievously injured and Rs 5,000 for 7 people with minor injuries.

9.27AM  The blasts took place in two coaches  S4 and S5 of the train at around 7.15am, barely 10 minutes after it had arrived at the railway station, the official added. 

9.39AM            One person suspected to be behind the blast has been taken into custody by Tamil Nadu police

9.42AM     Police have mounted a massive search operation in all the trains following the                     incident. 
9.45 AM           Security personnel have cordoned off the platform number 9 but the                                         movement of  other trains from and to Chennai Central has not been affected
9.46AM  General manager of southern railway Rakesh Mishra said the situation has been                   brought under control and all trains would run on schedule. He said officials could                  ascertain the nature of the blast only after examining the CCTV footage. Police                       and   bomb squads have been rushed to the spot. “As of now, we see no further                    threats,” said Mishra.
9.50 AM        An eye witness said he heard two gunshot-like sounds and saw fire coming                     from the switchboards inside coach S4 of the train. “The train was full. Through                    the smoke, I saw four people lying bleeding. Policemen came within five minutes,”             general manager of southern railway Rakesh Mishra. L Rufina, who was travelling to            Siliguri from Bangalore, said she woke up hearing a loud noise. "People were                          screaming in the compartment and rushing towards the exit," she said. The train                    was evacuated. Passengers say they have not been informed of an alternate plan as           yet. "I don't want to travel in the same train," said Rufina.
